Creating a productive workspace, while working from home...with my 3yr. old.

Updated: Aug 14, 2020

I can’t think of a better way to start this blog then by quoting the great musical duo, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (aka: Will Smith) , “Now, this is a story all about how my life got flipped-turned upside down”.

Well here we are August 2020 and Covid-19 has definitely accomplished turning our lives upside down! Suddenly words like, quarantine, isolation, pandemic and phrases like “wear a mask” and “working remotely” are used daily to describe our lives.

Sure, working from home seemed like a dream, but just like most dreams the reality comes with a harsh slap to the face. In this case the hand doing the slapping is sticky and belongs to the tiny person who calls me mom. Trying to be productive when your new office "co-worker" screams at you for snacks and won't even let you take a bathroom break in peace is down right exhusting and stifles creativity to say the least.

So what’s the answer? Drinking Heavily, sure, but that may affect the quality of my work and probably parenting. My solution, I hid in the closet...literally. When we moved to our home 2yrs ago I discovered one of the closets in a spare bedroom was especially deep, so I jokingly suggested to my wife about turning it into an office for me. With limited space suddenly my joke seemed like a viable idea.

So we contacted our friend and local small business owner Jeremy Brock of Bleu Diamond Specialties and they knocked it out of the park! Next we painted the desk, seating/storage area, and shelves white (we decided to do it ourselves in order to keep cost at a minimum). Lastly, we filled it with all of my electronics, alcohol for happy hour and items that bring a smile to my face...other than just the alcohol.

Below is the finished product and I couldn't be happier!
